อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่และมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีสุรนารี ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสถานเอกอัครราชทูตแคนาดา ประจำประเทศไทย ผ่านกองทุนแคนาดาเพื่อความริเริ่มท้องถิ่น (Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, CFLI) ให้พัฒนา “เทรลคลองปลากั้ง มิตรภาพไทย-แคนาดา” ในวาระการฉลองครบรอบ 60 ปีความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตของประเทศไทยกับประเทศแคนาดา โดยเส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาตินี้ดำเนินการที่หน่วยพิทักษ์อุทยานแห่งชาติ เขาใหญ่ที่ ขญ. 4 (คลองปลากั้ง) ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่ที่มีศักยภาพเหมาะสม มีความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพสูง ทั้งพรรณพืช นก สัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยน้ำนมขนาดเล็ก ตลอดจนสัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยน้ำนมขนาดใหญ่ ทั้งกระทิงและช้าง วัตถุประสงค์หลักของโครงการคือ เพื่อพัฒนาเส้นทางเดินป่าตามธรรมชาติ ที่ส่งเสริมการศึกษาและการอนุรักษ์ความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ และเอื้อประโยชน์ต่อชุมชนรอบอุทยานแห่งชาติ สร้างสังคมแห่งความยั่งยืน
การดำเนินการเพื่อพัฒนา “เทรลคลองปลากั้ง มิตรภาพไทย-แคนาดา” มี 4 กิจกรรมหลัก คือ (1) การออกแบบเส้นทางและการปรับภูมิทัศน์เดิมให้อยู่ในสภาพที่พร้อม และปลอดภัย เช่น บูรณะหอส่องสัตว์ ปรับปรุงสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำ (2) การพัฒนาสมาร์ทเทรล ด้วยการบูรณาการรูปแบบการสื่อความหมายเดิม กับแอปพลิเคชันบนโทรศัพท์มือถือ เพื่อสื่อความหมายถึงความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ เรื่องราว องค์ความรู้ชุมชน อย่างครอบคลุมและทันสมัย (3) การจัดอบรมการสื่อความหมายธรรมชาติและการเข้าถึงแอปพลิเคชันให้กับชุมชนรายรอบพื้นที่ เพื่อเป็นเครื่องมือสำหรับสร้างนักสื่อความหมายธรรมชาติในชุมชน และ (4) เปิดใช้เส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติ “เทรลคลองปลากั้ง มิตรภาพไทย-แคนาดา” ให้กับอุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่ ในวันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม 2566 ซึ่งตรงกับวันชาติแคนาดา
Klong Plakang Thailand-Canada Friendship Trail is supported by the Embassy of Canada through the Canada Fund for the Local Initiatives (CFLI) in partnership with Khao Yai National Park and Suranaree University of Technology. The trail commemorates the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations of Thailand and Canada. Located at Khao Yai National Park Protection Unit 4 (Klong Plakang), the trail is home to diverse plants and wildlife, including birds, small and large mammals, as well as gaurs and elephants. With strong potential use of the trail as an educational path due to its vast biodiversity and rich ecology, the goal of this project is to create a nature route that will promote education, biodiversity conservation, and sustainability so that local communities can thrive alongside the national park.
The project consists of 4 activities as follows: (1) design the trail route and renovation for safe and suitable hiking, by renovating the observation tower and building a creek crossing bridge, (2) develop a smart trail by integrating conventional interpretive signs and mobile application combining biodiversity knowledge and stories and local wisdom from local communities, (3) train and offer workshops for local nature tour guides, on trail safety and use of the smart trail mobile application to raise awareness of environmental protection in their own community (4) officially launch the "Klong Plakang Thailand-Canada Friendship Trail" to commemorate Canada Day on July 1, 2023.
